Hosted at the Taman Budaya in Jambi City, the event was organized in collaboration with the Teater Air Jambi Foundation to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic waste and promote efficient waste management solutions.
Key speakers at the event included Dr. Eng. Bayu Indrawan, Director of the Center of Waste Management Indonesia (CWMI), and Liza Milani, S.T., representative of the Jambi Provincial Environmental Office (DLH), who were joined by university students and members of the public.
The event began with a captivating theatrical performance by Teater Air Jambi, directed by M. Aldianto Muheldi, titled “Untangling Our Plastic.” The play, which attracted an audience of 231 attendees, delivered a powerful narrative on the environmental impact of plastic waste. Through compelling storytelling and stunning visual displays, the performance succeeded in bringing the issue to life in an engaging and thought-provoking way.
Following the theater performance, a talk show was held on “Green Economic Transformation for Sustainable Growth: Synergy of Renewable Energy, Sustainable Investment, and Environmental Preservation.” Dr. Bayu Indrawan highlighted the economic potential of plastic waste as a resource for renewable energy, while also addressing the financial challenges associated with transforming waste into energy.
“While plastic and other types of waste hold significant economic value as renewable energy sources, the high cost of production remains a major challenge. I encourage students to innovate by conducting research and developing prototypes related to renewable energy,” said Dr. Indrawan.
Liza Milani, S.T., from the Jambi Environmental Office, noted that the province had already implemented a waste bank program, aimed at adding economic value to waste. However, she emphasized that the responsibility for waste management extends beyond the government.
“Jambi has taken steps to enhance the value of waste through programs such as the waste bank initiative. However, solving the waste problem requires collective responsibility. The government cannot tackle this issue alone; public awareness and cooperation are essential in reducing plastic waste,” stated Liza Milani.
The event also marked the conclusion of the KSE FAIR 2024 competition, with winners in categories such as Poster, Essay, and Business Plan Competition (BPC) announced via an online ceremony.
