Center of Waste Management Indonesia (CWMI) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT®), a renowned international non-profit organization founded by the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University, New York. This milestone marks a new chapter for Indonesia in advancing science-based, sustainable solutions for waste management.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Eng. Bayu Indrawan, President of CWMI, and Prof. Qunxing Huang, Ph.D., President of the Global WtERT Council. Through this agreement, CWMI will host WtERT Indonesia, positioning itself as the national representative within WtERT’s global knowledge and innovation network.
Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment: transforming residual non-recyclable waste into valuable energy and materials, instead of relying on landfilling practices that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
“By joining the WtERT global network, Indonesia is taking an important step towards a circular economy and climate resilience,” said Dr. Bayu Indrawan. “This partnership empowers CWMI to bring the world’s best practices, research, and technologies directly into Indonesia’s waste management ecosystem.”
Key Areas of Cooperation
Under this five-year partnership, CWMI and WtERT will:
-
Conduct joint research and knowledge exchange on sustainable waste management and Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies.
-
Promote the adoption of environmentally advanced technologies to reduce methane emissions from landfills.
-
Organize conferences, workshops, and training for policymakers, industry leaders, and students in Indonesia.
-
Strengthen industry–academia collaboration to influence research and policy development.
-
Launch a bilingual WtERT Indonesia webpage to provide reliable, science-based information for the public and decision-makers.
Indonesia Joins a Global Movement
WtERT has a strong international presence, with sister organizations in more than 20 countries including the United States, China, Germany, Brazil, India, and Japan. With the establishment of WtERT Indonesia, the nation now takes its place in a global alliance of researchers, policymakers, and innovators dedicated to advancing sustainable waste solutions worldwide.
Prof. Qunxing Huang emphasized the importance of this partnership: “Indonesia is a key player in the global sustainability effort. We are proud to welcome CWMI as part of the WtERT family, working together to turn waste challenges into opportunities for clean energy, climate action, and sustainable growth.”
A Step Towards National and Global Impact
This collaboration positions CWMI not only as a national leader in waste management research but also as a bridge between Indonesia and the global scientific community. It reflects CWMI’s mission to inspire transformative solutions that align with Indonesia’s development goals and global sustainability commitments.
With this MoU, CWMI and WtERT embark on a visionary journey – advancing science, innovation, and collaboration for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Indonesia.
